The political science major at Berkeley seeks to achieve three main objectives: Familiarize students with the issues surrounding the exercise of political power. Provide exposure to the main subfields of political science along with opportunities for specialization and experimentation in a single area. Sociology will often study political institutions to examine how they interplay with these other aspects of society. Political institutions can be defined as entities with a society that creates, enforces, and makes laws. For example, the court system is a political institution, so is a head of state or head of government.
